Many young girls have been the victim of some kind of sexual violence. They have received threats, harassment, stalking, assault and rape. This is an invasion of privacy. Those who have gone through such experience feel the horrors of fearing for their safety daily. It is critical to make a report if you are experiencing threats, harassment and stalking and if you have been assaulted or rape.

Sexual violence, as well as the way it is reported, publicized, and dealt with often times makes it seem as if the victims ought to be blamed. A society should endeavor that the victims feel safe, and objectively investigate the accusations.

Emotional reactions from these experiences can range from trivial to very strong, depending upon what has happened. Some of the reactions include:

  • Anxiety and fear

  • Feeling unsafe

  • Unsettling memories

  • Nightmares

  • Extreme distress

  • Rapid heartbeat, tension and sweating

  • Difficult sleeping

  • Guilt, shame and self-blame

  • Feeling embarrass

  • Depression and hopelessness
