A murderer is an individual who looks ordinary but their brain functions differently. People who execute murders habitually kill to affirm power and be seen. They will commit this in order to punish a person or group of people that they are unhappy with or scared of. Those held and convicted of murder generally do not show guilt for their wicked actions. Most have no guilt and feel that it is acceptable for them to do the act because they perceive themselves as special. Murderers usually don’t just “snap” - their crimes are carefully thought out and planned in an evil heart. They tend to use “mind games” to control friends, family members, co-workers, and strangers. They may also be perceived as innocent and charming.
Murderers would be classified as having Antisocial Personality Disorder, sometimes called sociopathy. This is a mental disorder where an individual regularly displays no respect for right and wrong and disregards the rights and feelings of others. They tend to provoke, control, treat and hurt persons seriously or callously. Murderers are usually stimulated by the ordeal through which they put victims, enjoying mastery over them and gloating in their fear and helplessness. They lack the ability to empathize with the suffering of victims.
Risk factors to developing antisocial personality disorder include:
Diagnosis of childhood conduct disorder
Family history of antisocial personality disorder or other personality disorders or mental health disorders
Being subjected to abuse or neglect during childhood
Unstable, violent or chaotic family life during childhood
